BB&T Corp. disclosed Tuesday it provided more than $26 million in funding toward charitable initiatives and participated in more than 1,200 community projects during 2017.

BB&T staff recently took on more than a dozen projects for Hope Station as a part of the Lighthouse Project - four of which pertain to the new family shelter. BB&T staff worked to install a new playground this week that will be used for the family shelter. Other teams will be stocking the family shelter's kitchen with supplies, including dishes, cookware, glasses and children's plates and cups as well as a dining table and chairs.

The company was awarded an “outstanding” rating during the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.’s (FDIC) most recent evaluation of Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) performance. It is the highest rating given by the agency on how well a financial institution meets the credit needs of its communities.

North Carolina A&T State University has sold the naming rights to its 37-year-old football stadium to the bank based in Winston-Salem for $1.5 million, a gift that amounts to $100,000 per year for 15 years. The name change, which will include new signage, should take place after July 1, athletics director Earl Hilton said today.

BB&T is shifting away from putting its name over the company’s successful insurance subsidiary, instead choosing to operate under a venerated industry name it acquired in 2003. The bank said Monday that BB&T Insurance Holdings Inc. — the nation’s fifth largest insurance broker — will start doing business at McGriff Insurance Services on June 25.

For 30 years, the Harris Poll has been measuring brand equity, and it this year awarded 80 different companies the “Brand of the Year” designation. Also winning top billing was another Winston-Salem power, BB&T Corp., in the Super Regional Bank category. The bank had also claimed the top spot in that category in 2015.

BB&T bank employees came to the school near Ashland to help the students write letters to military members deployed in Jordan. It's a part of the bank's annual Lighthouse Project. "We have a lot of clients that come in and talk to us about family members in the military and one of our employees actually has her husband deployed in Jordan where we're sending the packages," BB&T Branch Banker Susanne Smith said.

The nation’s eighth largest bank reported Thursday having net income of $597 million, down 0.3 percent from a year ago. Diluted earnings were 74 cents, up 1 cent. BB&T took $47 million in merger and restructuring charges in the quarter worth 4 cents.
